Tiruvannamalai

Just 4.5 hours away from Chennai city this town Thiruvannamalai is a must-visit for various reasons & here are my reasons:

Arulmigu Arunachaleswarar Temple temple dedicated to the deity Shiva, located at the base of Arunachala hill

• Sri Ramana Maharshi Ashram open from 8 am-12 pm during covid

• Can get little adventures and try going on a Trek on the mountains-to visit the Skandashram it is situated by the side of the Arunachala hill, this is the place where Ramana Maharshi meditated for a long period

• To experience the Deepam Festival & The Girivalam -it is around 14 km and it takes roughly 4 hours at an average pace

• Idukku Pillaiyar Kovil

Idukku pillayar koil is located in Thiruvannamalai, girivalam route. It's a very small temple without any god deity. The beauty of this temple is it has a very narrow passage where a worshiper has to pass through

There is an interesting saying about this temple:

1. The evil force around us will go off while we pass through this small passage

2. We will loose all our ego by changing our posture in order to somehow come out of this passage

fact -the narrow passage is equal to the width of the human skeleton so it allows anyone to come out easily

Try it without fail when you go for Girivalam

• Apart from other temples, there are 8 important shiva temples facing 8 important directions on the (side) path of Girivalam. All the Shivlings of these 8 temples are believed to have formed naturally

• This town has a hidden gem The Marudam Farm School. This is a community-based school where children learn from each other involved in education, afforestation, environmental education, organic farming, and more…..do get in touch if you wish to know more about this school

• One can buy the best-cast iron & steel utensils just outside the temple premises

· Indulge in some Gold & Silver Jewellery shopping at the towns best store at Santhi Swarnamahal

Karpaya mess -South Indian Joint for its south Indian breakfast

Udipi - for its sizzling hot idly and sambar

• The Dreaming Tree Café -Internationally influenced treehouse-style venue with a menu of health-conscious International food

Damantra-Vegan café for authentic vegan food
